Gangs resort to zip-guns

  • Written by

Cape Town – The Manenberg community policing forum (CPF) is worried that home-made zip-guns are flooding the streets, after a man was killed in one of the nine shootings that occured over the weekend.

CPF spokesman Kader Jacobs said along with violence between the Hard Livings and the Americans gangsters, they noticed an increase in the number of zip-guns manufactured in backyards, which he called a ‘new phenomenon’.  The guns, known as ‘Zippies’ fire 9mm bullets, but unlike proper guns, their barrels are not grooved, which means the direction of the bullets is random. “These guns are particularly dangerous because one can’t aim directly, so many innocent people will be hurt.”

Jacobs said because police were confiscating illegal guns, gangsters sought alternatives.

“The latest surge of violence was triggered two weeks ago. The brother of a senior Americans gang member was murdered by a Hard Livings member. Since then, it’s been hell.”
