Solar module manufacturing venture

  • Written by  moses

Port Elizabeth - JA Solar and Powerway PV SA (PWSA), a provider of solar farm construction services, have formed a joint venture to establish a solar module manufacturing facility in Port Elizabeth.

The facility, located in COEGA Industrial Development Zone, will service South Africa and the Southern African region. Production is to begin in the second quarter of 2014, targeted to reach an initial capacity of 150 MW. The facility is expected to provide over 200 jobs within the first year. The venture has the option to expand the production capacity up to 600 MW to meet growth in regional demand.

Baofang Jin, chairman and CEO of JA Solar said the facility will play a crucial role. “Improved cost-effectiveness is making solar an increasingly attractive energy alternative. Having a presence on the ground will give us the local knowledge needed to identify and pursue the best commercial opportunities while providing better services to our customers.”
